The present is the past and the past is the future. Part 2: The stagnation of design
The unease that we feel from fearing the unknown closely links to the idea of disgust that some people tend to feel when introduced to something new.
From a design point of view. It can be argued that it's extremely difficult for original designs to release due to this criticism against the idea of something new or know very little about. As clients are unwilling to accept something new and would rather opt for the familiar. This line of thinking could be used to argue the many cases of resurfacing trends in design, a few examples are how in fashion the resurgence of 90's era clothing and in architecture the many revivals of old styles such as gothic and romanesque.
This makes it harder for new ideas to flourish as they get categorised as something that already exists, people tend to explain things using ideas and words that people are familiar with, which also doesn't benefit the development of new styles.
The outcome of this is the stagnation of progress and development in design. Almost like we as a species are getting too comfortable.
